Questionable Art in Seattle

Stuffing so much into my first full day in Seattle lift a light load for my second full day. I got to sleep in, which is always a good thing, and headed out in the early afternoon.

Because I thought I was missing something the first time, I headed back to Pike Place Market. Going earlier than I had the first day, there were definitely more vendors, but still I was left a little disappointed. That’s ok, Seattle, I still love you.

My first major stop of the day was the Seattle Art Museum. An air-conditioned oasis in the Seattle heat, I set off through the museum. I saw a little more Chihuly, because you can never have enough Chihuly, and then continued on into the modern art section of the museum. If there’s one kind of art that I just don’t have an appreciation for, it’s modern art. I just don’t get it. Appreciation might be the wrong word, too. I can appreciate it, I just don’t like it. Anyway, I shuffled through the wing, squinting my eyes to see if I saw what other people were seeing. I just don’t get it.

I happily moved on to the historical part of the museum, featuring Native American art and artifacts. This wing moved on into Egyptian, Greek, Latin American, and Chinese artifacts.

The top floor was featuring a special exhibit about Africa. Loving Africa and all it has to offer, I was very much looking forward to this exhibit. However, more modern art. Really strange, thought inducing modern art. For the most part, it kind of just made me feel uncomfortable.

Overall, the Seattle Art Museum was interesting, just maybe not my cup of tea. I like a more traditional art museum like the ones I saw in Cleveland and Chicago. While, I appreciate the experience, I will kindly leave it to others.

All the thought provoking art made me hungry. Walking in the museum, I noticed across the street a restaurant that sounded right up my alley. One side of their menu was craft cocktails, some of them made with spun sugar. And of course, I got one. The glass comes full of cotton candy, which acts as the sweetener in the drink. The mixed cocktail comes in a shaker, and the server pours the cocktail over the cotton candy and it slowly dissolves. Really cool concept. My second cocktail was just as good, maybe better. The Ricochet Rabbit had muddled cucumber and fresh grapefruit juice, housemade vodka, topped with peach bitters. Delicious. Cooling down with a cocktail on the patio, I started of with a really delicious, light Caesar salad. For my entrĂ©e, I had some of the biggest mussels I’ve ever had. Light and flavorful, I was content. I ended my meal with a glass of port and cinnamon sugar beignets.

All in all, I had high expectations for Seattle. I hyped it up in my head before I arrive. While it met certain expectations, it sorely lacked for others. I enjoyed my time there and would be happy to go back.

Stay tuned for another blog, next time from Canada, ay!
