The night before when Eliza and I went out with her cousin to hang out with her friends, we actually did manage to talk to people other than ourselves. A couple of her cousin's friends even offered to take us out on his boat and go paddleboarding. We were both super excited!
Tequila makes offers that sober people forget about (Also, we did not drive. Eliza's aunt was our Uber for the night. FIVE STARS, FIVE STARS!!). Eliza and I didn't even wake up until 11am and by that point, we could barely function. We did try to get in contact with those guys that had made the offer, but lack of effort and no response led us to find something else to do. I kind of wanted to see Laguna Beach and sing Hilary Duff with the windows down, but those cheap margaritas had other plans.
Eliza's aunt started the grill and threw on some burgers and dogs, while I made sangria. Drinking more helps a hangover, right? We sat by the pool, shaded by the gazebo and sipped on our adult grape juice. For like three hours.
By the time we made moves to do things, it was almost 6pm. Sometimes, you just have to do lazy days. We got dolled up and headed to Laguna Beach (finally!). But not to the beach. To a really nice restaurant where one of Eliza's cousin's friend's brother bartended. Six degrees of getting me a drink. The cocktails were amazingly well made. By my second whiskey drink, I started to get hungry. Luckily, I wasn't the only one.
Even though it was just me and Eliza eating, we ordered enough appetizers to feed a small country. Grilled calamari stuffed with chorizo, ricotta-filled squash blossoms, butternut-sage gnocchi, and a burrata-fig tart. It didn't occur to me until halfway through our dinner that this was our last meal together. Eliza was staying in Laguna while I continued on my trip. I almost started to cry.
I know this is like a week later, but Eliza, thank you so much for coming on this adventure with me. I can't tell you what it means to me that you'd have this experience with me. Your family is amazing and so hospitable (FIVE STARS, FIVE STARS!!). I will see you in a couple months. Everyone else, stay tuned as I continue my trip solo!
