On Our Way to the Bay...

Finally some blue skies as we left Napa Valley and moved on down the coast. Eliza suggested we go to Muir Woods on our way to San Francisco. I didn't really know what to expect as we drove down yet another treacherous, mountain hugging road into a canyon. Because it was a Saturday around 11:00am, it was absolutely packed! Both parking lots were full and people were parking along the streets. We had to have driven three miles down the road looking for a parking spot before turning around to see if any spots had opened up in the lots. Every time I saw one open up, I was one car away from parking. I was getting frustrated and didn't want to play the game of driving up and down this dirt road much longer. Just as we were about to give up, I saw a spot open up and jumped at the chance to park. We changed into sneakers and set off into the beautiful day. Once we walked into the park, I was really glad we didn't give up. Just like the Redwood Forest, Muir Woods is filled with hundred-year-old, hundred-foot-tall Giant Redwoods and Giant Sequoias. It was beautiful. And what a perfect day to walk the mile long trail.

I overheard someone saying that this creek used to be twice as wide and at least four times higher, but because of the drought it's only about two feet wide and a couple inches deep.

When we left Muir Woods it was high time for lunch, so we continued on to the little city of Sausalito. We found a patio to sit and have fresh seafood on. We started with a dozen assorted oysters, moved on to hot lobster rolls, and ended with chocolate cake with hazelnut ice cream. I think we over ate a little and waddled back to the car to finally get to San Francisco.

However, San Francisco had other plans. Traffic going over the Golden Gate Bridge was horrendous. Add that to the very, very urgent need to use the bathroom and Eliza and I were panicking. After being stuck for a half an hour, we pulled up a side road that was littered with vista points. The first one had a bathroom but was so crowded we had to go even further up to get to a place we could turn around. We got some lovely pictures though. Even more traffic on the way back down led to possibly the worst bathroom experience of our lives.

Finally passing through the Golden Gate Bridge into city limits.... very slowly.

After a nearly two delay we finally made it into the city. Our first stop was the Painted Ladies which you might recognize from the opening credits of Full House. Yes, I was singing the theme song while there which Eliza really enjoyed, I think.

We settled into our homestay and relaxed for a couple hours. When we got hungry, we walked down the main road we were staying on (Fulton St.) until we saw a restaurant we liked. We settled o the Fly Bar that had great little pizzas. We got the Meat Lovers- proscuitto, sausage, pepperoni, and green peppers- and 'shroom Pie- caramelized onions, portobello mushrooms, topped with pesto. A couple drinks later, we were happy and full. So far, San Francisco has treated us well. Stay tuned for more to come in the next few days.
