Anyone? Anyone?!
Finally a late start to the day. After a long travel day the day before and many early mornings before that, I decided to not set an alarm. It felt great. By the time I left my homestay, it was lunch time. The place where I was staying was in Southeast Portland and that is where I spent the majority of my time while there. One of the main streets in SE Portland is SE Division St that is lined with restaurants from all over the globe. There are bookstores, bike shops, yoga studios, and ice cream parlors. For lunch, I decided on Indian.
I love Indian food, but the food I am used to having is kind of the Americanized version. This was completely authentic Indian street foods. This led to a bit of panic of not knowing what to order, but I chose two small plates and found a table inside in the air conditioning. I started off with a refreshing iced Chai. Seriously, the best I've ever had. With just enough spice, this creamy, silky drink almost went down too easy. I had lamb samosas (pastries filled with lamb, potato, mint, ginger, and peas) and paneer makhani (housemade paneer- a soft, tofu-like cheese- in a rich tomato cream, cashew cream curry with saffron rice). Amazing. Indian food can really go either way, but this is some of the best I've had. I took my time eating lunch, reading my book, and enjoying the cool air.

Out into the heat I went, heading to the mecca of bookstores Powell's Books. I went to the one of Hawthorne so it was a little smaller than the original, but it was still amazing. Rows upon rows, good prices, and book lovers all around. I bought a book (that I didn't need, but wanted) and headed to the adjoining cafe to soak up more air conditioning.

I was talking to my sister on and off through the day and she convinced me to find somewhere to watch the Women's FIFA final between US and Japan. Not terribly interested in soccer, I just headed back to where I was staying and stumbled upon an outdoor viewing/ beer fest. The screen was hard to see, but the beer was good. I stayed until after halftime because I couldn't stand the heat any longer.
A hot and sweaty and a little hungry, I found shelter in another restaurant. I cooled down with a spicy grapefruit paloma and read my book until I was actually hungry. I got the house salad that consisted of mesculin greens, shaved radishes, and pickled fennel. I also got a cauliflower and leek handpie with housemade ketchup and mustard. Now, quite full from a day of eating and cooled off enough, I just headed back to bed for the night. Not an overly exciting day in Portland, but a flavorful one!
One more day in Portland to see. Stay tuned!
