Stop number one was the Sturgis Motorcycle museum. My second one in as many weeks, I think I was a little out of place in a white, linen sundress. Anyway, I made my way through and saw more cool bikes and paraphernalia.
I was starting to get hungry while walking through the museum, so my next stop was looking for a place to sit and eat. I chose the Knuckle Saloon. I wish I had remembered to take a picture of the inside because it was crazy. I sat down at the bar to have some lunch and before I can even order a beer from their brewery, I made friends with an older couple of friends. We spoke about where they were from, where I was from, where they were headed, where I was headed, and how they knew each other. They gave me suggestions on where to stop next and bought me my beer. They were really sweet people and I'm glad I sat down where I did. As for my actual lunch, I had the Knuckle Saloon's famous steak tips with sauteed mushrooms and onions. While I've definitely had better, it was enough to fill me up.
I said goodbye to my new friends and walked back to me car. It wasn't until then that I noticed I had parked in front of a donut shop. Because lunch wasn't totally satisfying, I caved and got a donut. For 52 cents. Seriously. And, it was probably one of the better, freshest donuts I've ever had. After my donut, I headed out of Sturgis to my next stop: Belle Fourche, SD, geographical center of the Nation.
There's a museum in Belle Fourche with a monument to cite the center of the Nation. And that's what I thought I had found on my GPS. What actually happened was I passed the museum and headed probably 40 minutes out of town, in the middle of nowhere to get to the actual coordinates of the geographical center of the Nation. "Arriving at you destination..." I looked around and saw rolling hills and fields next to the one lane highway I was on. A u-turn and 40 more minutes and I was back where I needed to be. The museum that housed the monument also had a Tri-State Museum. Interested, I checked that out as well.
On my way to my final destination for the day, I made my way towards Devil's Tower. All the pictures I took all kind of look the same, but the reason I took so many was because it was beautiful. This amazing natural monument took my breath away.
My resting place for the evening was Sheridan, WY. This is a place my dad has raved about since I started talking about this trip. Frankly, at first, I wasn't impressed. It was kind of just more of what I'd seen. I stopped at Blacktooth Brewing where I had two mediocre beers.
They didn't serve food there, which was disappointing, although I noticed quite a few people getting food delivered. I googled places to eat in the area, and found some good reviews for a placed called Frackelton's. Again, I wasn't expecting much. I'm so glad when I'm wrong.
The restaurant was beautiful and very busy. I found myself a seat at the bar where I happily saw that it was fully stocked and didn't just have Jack, Jim, and Jose. While looking over their craft cocktail list- again, very pleasantly surprised- a group of people next to me, who were admittedly a little drunk starting asking me about my life. They were very nice, albeit hammered, but hearing what I was saying, the bartender started talking to me about my trip too. She told me that she loves to travel, too, and she's hoping for a trip to Greece in the coming summers. I told her that I served and bartended a bit in Connecticut. Jokingly, I think, she offered me a job. She kept me engaged and laughing throughout my dinner and after a while, servers at the end of their shifts started joining us at the bar for a shift drink and dinner. The bartenders sister-in-law came, too, and we started talking about Yellowstone National Park and the best way to get there.
I was really happy. I felt like I was part of their restaurant family. It made me miss my friends back home, but also made me realize that there are fun and functional restaurants in the world that would be happy to have me work for them. So, Sydney and crew, if you're reading this, thank you again for the company. Hopefully, one day I'll be back in Sheridan and we can have more fun!
More to come, next time in Yellowstone National Park!
