Mustard Museum? Don't Mind If I Do!

The soundtrack to my morning was thunder, rain and wind. Not a great start to the day, but I love rain, so I was undeterred. My first stop of the day in Milwaukee was the North Point Lighthouse, and boy if there was ever a day that needed a light house.

If you squint, you can see the lake!

Just soaking wet.
The lighthouse is part of the Lakefront Park. The street that runs along the park is full of what I can only describe as the most stately of manors. Take a look.

Next stop was the Water Tower and another peak at the lake!

Miller Park, home to the Milwaukee Brewers, was next. At this point the wind was blowing so hard, I couldn't open my door to get out of my car. So these are the pictures through my windshield wipers!

Time for lunch! My mom sent me a list of the best places in Milwaukee to have cheese curds because the ones I had at Lakefront Brewing were not on the list. So, twist my arm, I guess I'll try some more. This led me to the Milwaukee Brat House. All their beers come in the fun mugs and two mugs equal a pint. It wasn't even noon yet.

These cheese curds were just as good as the previous days. The only differences really were that they were smaller, battered, and the dipping sauce was definitely just a ranch this time. The sausage sampler consisted of (clockwise starting at 11 o'clock) a spicy Hungarian sausage, bratwurst, hot Italian sausage with tomato paste, and a Polish sausage. All that came on beds of sauerkraut, sauteed onions and mushrooms, and roasted red peppers, served with a pretzel roll. Yum. To help me digest, some lovely scenes from Milwaukee.

By now the rain had stopped and I had to start the next part of my Wisconsin journey. Off to Middleton, which is just outside of Madison. Middleton is literally the cutest town ever. Walking through the streets, I imagined no one locked their front doors. A couple of things brought me to Middleton. Capital Brewing is located there, which I was looking forward to. Not open on Mondays. Every other day from 4-9. Boo. The next thing that brought me to Middleton is Death's Door Distillery; the location in Middleton closed permanently. I know that you're probably thinking I didn't do my research before this trip. I looked up these places a month ago. For every place I visit, I have an index card of what to do there. I'm prepared. Middleton was not.

Anyway, the main reason I came to Middleton was for the National Mustard Museum. I'd heard about it on one of my favorite podcasts and I'm so, so glad I went. The top level was the store/ gift shop. Free samples were scattered about, little dixie cups of different mustards with baskets of pretzel sticks to try them all. After looking through the shelves, if you see something that piqued your interest, go back to the tasting bar where the attendant lets you try just as many samples as you want. They have every kind they sell opened, so it could take a while. The second floor was the museum. And it was just the best place. I think I could have lived there if I asked.

The National Mustard Museum did not disappoint and neither did Milwaukee. Tomorrow is a long travel day to Sioux Falls, SD. Wish me luck and you'll have another blog to read soon!
