Taylor Kohnstam's Day Off- Chicago, Part 1

A long day in Chicago started with an easy drive in. As opposed to when I first got to the city the previous night in gridlock traffic. Partly cloudy and unseasonable cool, I set out to begin my day.

First stop, The Chicago Theatre. A beautiful marquee and some great headliners coming in the next few days.

Second stop, the Chicago Cultural Center. There was a private event happening and I don't think I was supposed to be in the building, so I took a quick picture and headed out.

Next stop, The Bean. It's actually called Cloud Gate, and from what I understand, the artist who designed the work hates when it's called The Bean. My opinion, maybe he shouldn't have created a giant, reflective bean? Anyway, located in the center of Millennium Park, it's one of the biggest tourist attractions in Chicago.

Some interesting art in Millennium Park.

Time for lunch! A Chicago style hot dog. Yellow mustard, sliced tomatoes, diced onions, sweet relish, hot pickled peppers, topped with a pickle, this delicacy is making my mouth water even now as I write this. Really very good.

While enjoying my lunch, I got to listen to what I assume was the Chicago Symphony and Lyric Opera singers rehearse for a free concert they are having the next two nights. Lunch and a show, who could complain? And look at this outside theater! Also a really lovely fountain/ work of art on the way out. There was a twin piece maybe 600ft from this one with jets of water coming out. Lots of little kids were having a lot of fun with it.

After lunch was the Art Institute of Chicago. Another two and a half hours well spent. Along with artifacts from different cultures and countries, they housed some of the most famous and recognizable pieces of art in the world. Get ready to be inundated with art!

Van Gogh, Degas, Picasso, Dali, Monet, Manet, Seurat, Hopper, O'Keefe, Reubens, and others. This is why I'll go to as many art museums as I can. Because you never know what you'll see. I never in my life though I'd see Sunday in the Park or American Gothic. But I did. And I'll  never forget it.

A walk along the lakefront trying to get to the Navy Pier got me all mixed up. I headed in the complete opposite direction as I needed to be and ended up back in the center of the city where, instead, I decided to take an architectural boat tour. Now, as you might remember me saying previously, it was unseasonable cool in Chicago. Completely unprepared in a dress, sandals, and light sweater, my toes were blue half way through the 90 minute tour. I enjoy it though!

My extremities frozen and my stomach rumbling, I ended my day with another Chicago delicacy, the deep dish pizza. While it wasn't the best pizza I've ever had, it was very satisfying and I could see why people enjoy it so much.

More Chicago to come! Stay tuned!
