Only in Wisconsin, am I right?
Today was a day spent mostly in the car. An unfortunate fact because today was a beautiful day. Mid-70s, not a cloud in the sky. That's okay, though, many more days like that to come! The 7+ hour drive was fine. Not much traffic, just a bit of construction. The only thing I can complain about driving through Minnesota is that is smells. Where Wisconsin's farms were adorable and quaint along the sides of highways, Minnesota's farms stink. I mean honestly, they've got to be putting something in the feed they give to the cows because heaven, almighty, it was potent!
Okay, enough poo talk. Finally, after my nose hairs had been melted, I arrived in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mostly an industrial town with a hidden gem. Falls Park has very beautiful water features surrounded by perfectly manicured grounds. The natural formations were formed by a glacier 14,000 years ago that stretched from the Missouri River to Ohio, leaving behind these beautiful scenes.
It even has it's own wildlife! I'm pretty sure this is a chipmunk, but I would like to think of it as a small prairie dog.
On the far side of the park is the shell of what used to be a flour mill. Making flour uses a lot of energy and back in 1881, the people of Sioux Falls thought that the falls would give the plant enough energy. The mill closed two years later for not being able to meet the quotas they were given. The building was resold quite a few times and then was burned nearly to the ground in the 1960s. This is all that remains today.
After a long day, I walked to the cafe in the park and, overlooking the falls, I enjoyed a delicious seasonal salad and Goose Island Honkers Ale.
A short drive to my hotel and after almost walking into a room with someone already staying there, I was upgraded to this monster:
Unfortunately, I'm only staying one night in this mansion of a room and setting off on another long day in South Dakota tomorrow! Until then....
